Lindberg
Another veteran of plastic kit production in the US, Lindberg have an extensive range of ship kits. They have a rather infamous reputation
for crude and toylike (most of their larger ships were designed for motorisation) kits of very dubious accuracy, and to be honest this is partly deserved
- even their best kits still need a lot of work, and most of their smaller-scale kits are so bad as to be beyond redemption -
but Lindberg nevertheless have an extensive range of large-scale (1/250+) ship kits covering a very wide variety of unique subjects, including a Coast Guard cutter,
various WW2 landing craft, and civilian vessels (some of which are ex-Pyro moulds, see below) ranging from sports cruisers to tugboats and lightships. All can be built into very good models with suitable references and
a bit of extra work.
Most or all of Pyro's kit moulds went to Lindberg after their demise, so most of Pyro's ship kits can be found in Lindberg boxes. Most of their civil ships - such as the tug, lightship, trawler and tuna fisher - have remained in production,
but of the sailing ships, only a handful are still available under completely spurious "pirate" names. This does however include the excellent Wappen von Hamburg ("Captain Kidd") and La Flore ("Jolly Roger").
Most of Lindberg's kits were out of production and hard to find until recently, but over the last year or so (2008/9) there has been a steady stream of reissues and most are now available
at retail, even in the UK (from specialist online/mail order dealers at least). Lindberg are now under new management and have announced a number of impressive-sounding new kits (their first
new releases for many years) including 1/72 WW2 IJN submarines and the Kriegsmarine aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin in 1/200.
